packaging problem=chewy, dry, and flavorless red vines July 16, 2007 Dorsie L. Hathaway (Vancouver, WA USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was very excited to find gluten free Candy Tree organic Raspberry Vines. Even compared them against 4 other gluten free types of licorice. Chose this kind because it was the softest and most appealing to my palate.
Even though the product was soft and pliable as I felt the cellophane wrapper, and seemed fresh, the end result was disappointing. The raspberry vines I purchased and ate were sadly chewy, dry, tough, and lacking in expected raspberry flavor.
I appreciate the company's effort to make organic GF red vines available, but believe the cellophane and paper packaging is inadequate. In order to protect the moisture that must be present for red vines to remain soft and flavorful, they need more layers of protection. I hope Candy Tree can improve their packaging so the resulting red vine shelf life, taste and texture will be as good for the customer as it must be when it comes off their production line.
Wish I could recommend the product; right now, I can't. They're just-disappointing. I believe that Candy Tree may need to go to reusable packaging. Will try it again within six months and update my review if I can detect a positive change in product taste and texture.
Too hard - choking hazard - go with the bites or vines instead. July 4, 2007 A. Lamb (WI) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I give this product 2 stars because the taste is really good, and the ingredients are natural and I did not have an allergic reaction.
But this product is really hard. Nearly impossible to chew. I almost choked on it a few times before giving up. I'll have to throw the whole case away - I can't eat them. I even tried microwaving the laces for about 20 seconds, which helped, but as soon as they cooled down they went hard again.
My advice is to stick with the vines or the bites, the bites being the softest of all. I am off to order a case of raspberry bites....
